When protecting the environment means precious buildings too

Protecting precious landmark buildings can sometimes be just as important to communities as looking after their green spaces.

And our Guildford region is doing precisely that at Boxgrove Gardens with the careful restoration of Uplands House, a grand Victorian building in the town boasting over a century-and-a-half of history.

It has been refurbished into five stylish apartments while maintaining the features and character that have made it such a prestigious home over the years.

It was first inhabited by W.W. Pocock in the 1860s, a Liberal candidate for Guildford. Later inhabitants included a veteran general from the Napoleonic wars and Southwark MP Colonel Marcus Beresford.

The house was requisitioned by the government just before the outbreak of World War Two and in peacetime provided accommodation for civil servants. Its restoration is the final phase of Boxgrove Gardens and the luxurious apartments are now on the market.

Linden Homes Guildford managing director Peter Youll said: “For many people, protecting the environment means focussing on wildlife and plants, but it also means preserving our community surroundings which includes important and valuable buildings.

“We’ve restored Uplands House into beautiful apartments which will bring life once again to what has been an enduring and much-loved architectural fixture in Guildford.”
