We’re throwing our weight behind a £250,000 scheme to improve trade skills, boost the construction industry and help young people into work.

The Sherford Skills Training Scheme is a project running alongside the creation of a new community in the heart of Devon by a group of housebuilders including Linden Homes,Bovis Homes and Taylor Wimpey.

With City College Plymouth and one of their partners, South Devon College, we will help provide training, experience and long-term employment opportunities during every phase of the development of 5,500 new homes and employment and retail space.

By identifying gaps in the local trades and skills market, the scheme will engage schools and community groups, young people and school leavers, apprentices, unemployed people and encourage more women into construction.

The scheme was warmly welcomed by the local authority partners behind Sherford. The Leader of Plymouth City Council, Tudor Evans, said: “We’ve been working very hard to improve the links between the sector, our education establishments and our young people to make them aware of the doors that are open to them in construction.

“It’s fantastic that a ground breaking project like Sherford is also going to help develop our young people and offer them opportunities in the construction industry.”
