Pupils learn safety lessons at Discovery Quarter

Eager youngsters were excited to see heavy machinery in action when we invited them to tour one of our developments in Exeter.

The Red Class from St David’s Primary School visited Discovery Quarter for the morning where they met members of the building team who taught them some of the important site safety sign language.

Twenty-six children and their teacher, Lucy Herring, had a personal lesson from site manager Pip Swan and forklift operator Kevin Rice on keeping safe around heavy plant.

The primary school is next door to Discovery Quarter and pupils have been captivated watching the build develop from their playground. The development is a mix of houses and apartments refurbished from some of the original historical buildings.

Linden Homes South West managing director Bill Cawse said: “Diggers and builders are always a firm favourite with children, so we thought it would be a fun idea to show them round a development that is almost next door to their school.

“They also learned important lessons about health and safety on building sites, which is always top of our list of priorities during construction. I hope this visit might inspire some of the pupils to be the builders of tomorrow!”

Ms Herring used the experience to build a further lesson on listening and speaking back in the classroom “They certainly paid attention and came back with a list of questions about house building, they really got involved,” she said.
