A former hospital in Chelmsford whose maternity unit delivered thousands of local people into the world is being born again with its beautiful façade in pride of place.
Our Eastern region is taking great care to protect the listed building’s most striking features as we rejuvenate St John’s with a collection of quality homes so that it becomes busy with people once again.
The old hospital is special to the community because it is estimated that as much as half the city’s population was born in the old maternity wing.
Parts of it date back to the mid-19th century but it shut down in 2010 when the last of its services were transferred to Broomfield Hospital. It has remained empty ever since.
But now it is being given a new lease of life with the construction of superb one and two-bedroom apartments and two, three and four-bedroom houses.
Linden Homes Eastern’s director and general manager, Adrian Bohr, said: “We’re very proud to be honouring this site’s significant legacy by bringing it into sustainable use and protecting its special character.
“The buildings mean a lot to the people of Chelmsford so we’re determined to deliver quality homes that create a popular new neighbourhood in the city.”
We only use composite front doors which are insulated to lessen heat loss from our homes.
All of our homes come with Smart Meters. These have the capacity to automatically send readings to your energy provider.
