Community partnership delivers classrooms and homes

Pupils in Bermondsey celebrated the official handover of two new classrooms, thanks to a £235,000 community partnership between their school and our South East region.

St Joseph’s RC Primary School in George Row now enjoys 2,300 square feet of extra teaching space thanks to our redevelopment of The Tanyard by Linden Homes. The land adjoining the school has been turned into high quality apartments with classrooms on the ground floor directly accessed by the school.

The wider, local community will benefit too as the classrooms will soon be made available for community use. There is secure, direct access from the street which will separate community users from the main school building.

Headteacher Mr Macauley said: “The school is making full use of our new educational facilities and the children have benefitted enormously from the extra space available.”

Southwark Council leader Cllr Peter John said: “I was very impressed with the new classrooms provided for St Joseph’s School. All too often the benefits and investment that developments offer a community are abstract or simple financial contributions.

“I hope to be able to see more examples of new homes being provided in conjunction with real local benefits in the future.”
