Greg Fitzgerald, the chief executive of Linden Homes’ parent company Galliford Try, was nominated for a prestigious award by the college where he was taught building studies as a teenager.
South Devon College put Greg forward to receive the Association of Colleges Gold Award which he was presented with by Lord Willis of Knaresborough at the House of Commons.
He was among eight former students from colleges around the country at the ceremony on June 5th. It is held each year to celebrate the success of further education alumni and the part their colleges have played.
Greg has been chief executive of Galliford Try PLC since 2003 and instrumental in it reaching record profit levels in 2012, despite the tough economic climate.
He is now spearheading a partnership between Galliford Try and South Devon College to maximise local educational, training and employment opportunities around the South Devon Link Road project.
Greg said: "It makes me extremely proud to be recognised in this way and I am delighted that I have been able to maintain my relationship with South Devon College for many years.”
College principal Stephen Criddle added: "Greg Fitzgerald really deserves his award, not only for his own personal success but also because his company Galliford Try are putting a lot back in to the community through an education programme with the college, which benefits primary and secondary school children as well as college students.”
