Aspiring builders get a taste of construction career

Quality: an example of the homes trainees visited at Rowes Meadow in Devon

Quality: an example of the homes trainees visited at Rowes Meadow in Devon

Aspiring construction students got a taste of their future careers when they visited one of our developments in Devon.

A group of carpentry and bricklaying trainees from South Devon College were given a tour of Rowes Meadow, in Stoke Gabriel, to experience a working site and see the finished homes.

They were given an induction that included initiatives put in place by Linden Homes’ health and safety team, such as near-miss reporting and safety protocol. They also got the chance to ask questions and find out about a site manager’s responsibilities.

The college’s senior section head for construction, apprenticeships and heritage, Dean Bowden, said: “Site visits like this one provided by Linden Homes, plus work experience, are a great way of adding value to our full-time learners’ study.

“Learners get to experience real working environments which help to reinforce subjects taught on their full time programmes, preparing them for the world of work and enhancing their employability skills.”

The students are hoping later to find full-time employment though an apprenticeship, such as the ones set to be provided under Linden Homes’ plans for a dedicated academy in Bristol to train up hundreds of young trades people.
