Surrounded by picturesque villages, country lanes and thatched cottages, the Devonshire town of Okehampton is less than an hour away from the Eden Project.
With village greens, market towns and the nearby Meldon Reservoir it's an area crying out to be explored. At times the only traffic you'll see is sheep and ponies.
Beauty on your doorstep
The great thing is you don't even have to leave the town to witness nature's beauty:
Roadford Lake is ideal for watersports and fishing
Okehampton Castle, an 11th century ruin is featured in two paintings by the English painter, Turner
Simmons Park, containing the East Ockment river
And if you're feeling fit, the nearby military training base, Okehampton Camp, is the starting point for the annual Ten Tors 55 mile hike. You could always pop into one of the village pubs afterwards.
The gateway to Dartmoor
Due to its location on the northern edge of Dartmoor, Okehampton acts as a gateway to the 368 square mile national park. Its highest peak, Yes Tor, lies directly behind the town.
Okehampton therefore has excellent transport links, including rail connections to Exeter and Plymouth and bus routes to Cornwall.
