Bermondsey History

Not all that long ago, the banks of the Thames in Bermondsey, less than half a mile from Skyline, were lined with wharves and warehouses. As London’s world-leading Docks gradually declined and disappeared in the 1960s, the area ‘slipped off the map’. The property boom in and around the City in the early 21st century was slow to cross the river, and Bermondsey was spared the worst of the rushed, overcrowded construction.

The result is that now the neighbourhood features stylish lofts, warehouse conversions and cutting-edge commercial and residential spaces, with mature trees and open spaces in between, offering unmatched views of Tower Bridge and the City skyline.

The arrival of The Shard, Europe’s tallest skyscraper, has been followed by a host of restaurants, boutiques and bars, many incorporated in sensitive conversions of old industrial and commercial buildings.

Throughout the 19th century, Bermondsey was the centre of London’s tanning and leather processing industry, deemed too noxious and unsuitable for the crowded City and East End. Many street names and buildings from that era survive, including Tanner Street, Morocco Street and Leathermarket Street as well as the huge Leather Market (1833) and the Leather, Hide and Wool Exchange (1878). Virtually all are now residential or small work spaces and offices. These exclusive new flats in Bermondsey are actually located on the site of the historic Grange Tannery.

This rich cultural history has led to a unique, relaxed ambience around Bermondsey - very much one of London’s best ‘villages’. Bermondsey Street is in fact one of London’s most ancient streets.

Bermondsey Transport*

The position of Skyline in Grange Walk means that many local residents can easily walk to work in the City, just a mile away. Cycling is another option, with Canary Wharf (3.5 miles), Westminster (2.5 miles) and the West End (4 miles) all an easy ride.

The nearest Tube station is Bermondsey (0.7 miles, 14 minutes’ walk) on the Jubilee Line, for direct services to Canada Water (5 minutes), Canary Wharf (8 minutes), Waterloo (9 minutes) and Baker Street (20 minutes). London Bridge Underground station (1 mile, 19 minutes’ walk) is on the Northern Line, for Bank (4 minutes), Elephant & Castle (5 minutes) and Kings Cross (12 minutes).

Properties for sale in Bermondsey also benefit from being close to London Bridge train station (1 mile, 19 minutes’ walk), which offers local services throughout south east London, and mainline services to the south and southeast, for Brighton and the Kent countryside. There are also Thameslink services through London to the north.

Excellent bus services, including Night Buses across Central London, run along Grange Road, Tower Bridge Road and Borough High Street.
London City Airport is just 6 miles away.

Shopping and Leisure

There are ample local amenities within walking distance of Skyline for your everyday needs.

By far the most exciting and celebrated shopping destination in the neighbourhood is Borough Market, just over a mile away. This is one of London’s most popular ‘foodie’ haunts, offering an impressive array of fresh local produce in addition to a colourful and eclectic blend of foodstuffs from all over the world. Whatever your flavour, take your pick of bars, cafes, hot food stalls and artisanal baked goods available all-day and late into the night.

Alongside the river, and in the maze of streets en route to Waterloo and the South Bank, there’s an abundance of shops, restaurants, cafes, pubs and bars to suit all tastes. Strolling from Skyline to cultural attractions such as Shakespeare’s Globe theatre, Tate Modern, The National Theatre and the Royal Festival Hall is a Bankside walk through London’s captivating history right up to the thriving, cosmopolitan present day.

Even closer to these flats for sale in Bermondsey is the White Cube gallery, an important contemporary art venue. This is one of many art galleries in the area, while the inspiring Fashion & Textile Museum nearby is home to regular exhibitions and a fascinating and valuable collection.

For fresh air and exercise, there are stunning parks, gardens and green open spaces surrounding Skyline. Bermondsey Spa Gardens is nearby while Southwark Park, with its lake and lawns running down to the river, is just over a mile away.
