Bermondsey History

Not all that long ago, the banks of the Thames in Bermondsey, less than half a mile from Skyline, were lined with wharves and warehouses. As London’s world-leading Docks gradually declined and disappeared in the 1960s, the area ‘slipped off the map’. The property boom in and around the City in the early 21st century was slow to cross the river, and Bermondsey was spared the worst of the rushed, overcrowded construction.

The result is that now the neighbourhood features stylish lofts, warehouse conversions and cutting-edge commercial and residential spaces, with mature trees and open spaces in between, offering unmatched views of Tower Bridge and the City skyline.

The arrival of The Shard, Europe’s tallest skyscraper, has been followed by a host of restaurants, boutiques and bars, many incorporated in sensitive conversions of old industrial and commercial buildings.

Throughout the 19th century, Bermondsey was the centre of London’s tanning and leather processing industry, deemed too noxious and unsuitable for the crowded City and East End. Many street names and buildings from that era survive, including Tanner Street, Morocco Street and Leathermarket Street as well as the huge Leather Market (1833) and the Leather, Hide and Wool Exchange (1878). Virtually all are now residential or small work spaces and offices. These exclusive new flats in Bermondsey are actually located on the site of the historic Grange Tannery.
