Probably beginning life as a Celtic village, Truro was a Norman settlement in the 12th century. Later it became a stannary town and during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, many wealthy mine owners built themselves elegant houses in the town. With Queen Victoria granting Truro city status in 1877, it remains to this day, the only city in Cornwall, a city renowned for its delightful riverside, cobbled streets, Georgian architecture and Victorian cathedral. Its unique combination of bustling markets, national retailers and independent shops provides a great choice for shoppers.
Steeped in history and full of charm, Truro’s attractions include art galleries, museums, cinema and the annual Truro Festival. The city also has a reputation as a gourmet destination and enjoys a diverse range of bars, clubs, pubs and restaurants. For keeping fit, Truro Leisure Centre is less than 3 miles from The Meadows and includes a sports hall, gym and swimming pool. The river estuary provides further opportunities for leisure, while there are parks and open spaces offering everything from formal gardens and riverside walks to children’s play areas and sports pitches.
