Great Barford is a well-connected part of Bedfordshire

Located less than 7 miles from Bedford, and just minutes away from the A1, the pretty village of Great Barford is an ideal place for families and commuters. Bedford has an extensive range of shops - both well-known high street retailers and independent shops - so whatever you want or need can be found here easily. And if you want to get away to London for work or play, you’ll be able to reach the city in around 50 minutes. It’s these benefits and more that make choosing a new home at Goodwin Place an easy decision.

What’s in Great Barford?

• The River Great Ouse
• Two good schools for children aged up to 13

Just a short walk from Goodwin Place is the River Great Ouse. Running a total length of around 143 miles, this is one of the longest rivers in the UK, starting at Syresham in Northamptonshire with its mouth at The Wash in Kings Lynn. The River passes through Great Barford for a few of those miles, and is an ideal place to take in the peace and quiet on offer. It is also a popular riverside ‘Great Walk’, where walkers regularly cover a route of just under 8 miles that takes them to some of the area’s historic points of interest, including the 15th century Great Barford Bridge, the English Heritage monument Danish Camp and the 16th century Grade I listed Willington Dovecote and Stables. The Dovecote is a nesting site for kestrels and barn owls, so this will be of interest to keen birdwatchers and nature lovers.

With the county operating a three-tier school system, families looking for property for sale in Great Barford benefit from two well-regarded schools being close to Goodwin Place, with a popular upper school a short distance away. Great Barford Lower School is a 5-minute walk from the development, and provides co-education to ‘fulfil the potential of every child’. Middle school Alban Church of England Academy is approximately half a mile’s walk away, and offers education to boys and girls while ‘promoting wisdom and learning based on Christian values’. Approximately 5 miles away by car is Mark Rutherford School, where students aged 11-19 benefit from a strong and wide-ranging education.

At just over 6 miles away by car is the town of Bedford. With plenty of shops, parks, entertainment and museums to choose from, there are options for all members of the family here. The Harpur Centre is home to a good selection of high street stores, with some independent shops alongside them. More independent names can be found at the nearby Arcade, and is where you’ll also discover a number of cafes to take some time out from the shops for a short while. Bedford has several live music venues and theatres to experience a variety of entertainment in, including concerts, performing arts and comedy. Museums throughout the town offer visitors an insight into historic figures from the town’s past as well as Bedford itself. There are also a number of parks in the town, such as Russell Park and Bedford Park, which are great spaces to relax in with family or friends. With all of this just a short distance away from your doorstep, this is an ideal part of the south to search for new homes.

For keen fishers, the park offers seasonal fishing passes for its lakes, with free fishing available on the River Great Ouse, which is on the outskirts of the park. Children will be able to enjoy the park’s play area, and the whole family can take advantage of the snacks, treats and drinks of offer at the park’s café.
